Sustainability and Our Community
At the start of 2019, we unveiled our new image and underwent a refurbishment, we also embarked on becoming a sustainable business and support for other businesses and charities in our local communities. Sustainability and our community are two things we are truly passionate about and believe are the very essence of Raw. We are committed to constantly striving to find new ways of being more sustainable and will continue to support our community in whichever way it needs us too.
What makes us a sustainable salon?
We have researched a number of ways to change everyday business at Raw into being eco-friendlier. This included partnering up with various product companies that could supply us with alternatives in salon that are kinder to the planet and most importantly cruelty free. We also researched other everyday products that we could swap out for more eco-friendly versions.
Viridor recycling waste. We are now recycling over 80% of salon waste.
Papernotfoiluk are a one of a kind company that have produced an alternative to salon foil. It’s made from recycled materials, non-toxic and is biodegradable. It can be reused a number of times and is heat, tear and bleach resistant.
Energy saver bulbs
Eco-heads are an attachment that we have had fitted to our basin taps. They reduce water wastage by 60% and filter the water so that hair and colour are rinsed more thoroughly.
Bio sac- 100% Biodegradable bin liners.
Recycled glasses for client refreshments
Wear&Tear disposal towels, these are made from recycled materials, are recyclable and more hygienic. It has eliminated washing and drying conventional cotton towels.
Oway Organics are a biodynamic product company. They supply our in-salon hair products and backwash
Shampoo and conditioner. They are also available to purchase. They are packaged in recycled amber glass and labelled using sugar cane waste. All the ingredients are grown on a biodynamic farm in Italy, are cruelty free and also some of the range are vegan.
We offer a refill service for our clients on their Oway products and in return they receive 15% off there purchase.
Oway biodegradable capes for colouring.
Colouring bowls and brushes made from straw
We refill all of our cleaning products and hand wash opposed to buying new and adding to the plastic problem.
We Love our community
We have been a part of our community for 11 years. We have always been passionate about charity and helping those that need it. However, we decided to truly focus on our communities and helping those close to us. We also understand that being a sustainable salon has a positive impact on our community.
In the last year we have supported the following charities:
Macmillan. We hold a bake sale every three months to raise money for the Macmillan.
Choices Women’s Refuge. We offered all the women and children free services in the salon. We also gifted them hair and beauty products as most of the women flee their situation with nothing but the clothes they are wearing.
Ellenor Hospice. We spent 4 months raising money for the Ellenor hospice. We held a bake sale, quiz night, bingo and tombola raising over £600.
Food Bank. We collected a large number of goods including food, hygiene and clothes for our local food bank at Christmas. Clients also got involved and donated, leaving their goods at the salon for us to drop off.
We were honoured to be asked if we would cut the hair of the residents of our local homeless shelter, of course we jumped at the opportunity.
Aside from raising awareness and funds for local charities, last year we set up a new scheme that involved young adults and children with disabilities. Many of our team are and have been faced with varying levels disability within their daily lives so we wanted to make a difference.
We came up with VIP Sunday. One Sunday a month we open exclusively for those with special needs. The reason for this, is to make the salon experience a quiet, relaxing and enjoyable experience for all.
We understand that certain individuals are not able to enjoy going to the hairdressers, it’s a scary prospect getting your hair cut. We tailor the salon to the induvial needs, whether that be no or low music and lighting, less people, one on one, picture symbols to explain the process and toys/colouring.
We are proud of the apprenticeship scheme that we offer to those looking to join the hairdressing industry.
We discovered, after being approached by a local special needs school, that their students also want to experience elements of hairdressing that they could not offer within their facilities, but the students would not be able to undergo the apprenticeship scheme due to their disability. So, we both came up with a mutual arrangement that the students could join the salon one day a week, with a carer/key worker and enjoy learning about the hairdressing industry and taking part practically. We are excited for this relationship to grow further and can’t wait to welcome many more students.
